I have heard that some essential oils are unsafe to use during pregnancy. Which ones, and why?

There is much controversy over the use of essential oils during pregnancy. Generally vapouriser essential oils do not cause any problems, except that a heightened sense of smell may mean you are more sensitive to certain oils. Speak with your physician about any concerns you may have.

During the first four months of pregnancy, it is best to avoid all essential oils for topical application.
There are however many other essential oils that are safe to use during the second and third trimester of pregnancy and can be very beneficial. Most recommendations include: Cardamom, Chamomile German, Chamomile Roman, Clary Sage, Coriander Seed, Geranium, Ginger, Lavender, Neroli, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Petitgrain, Rose, Rosewood, Sandalwood (Essential Oil Safety, Robert Tisserand).

Always speak to a trained Aromatherapist first, as they can give you advice on what is best for you, based on an individual assessment.
